Ms. Miller writes to us from Cambridge, England, where she is completing her MPhil in Development Studies. She is supported by the Rotary Clubs of High River and Ely Hereward (District 1080).
 
Hello Rotary Family,
 
It’s been a minute! To truly capture everything that has happened since my last update would probably require a book—but since I don’t have time for that, I’ll share just a few highlights.
 
 
 
Despite the many complications that came with obtaining ethics approval, I could finally travel to Jamaica and complete my fieldwork at two schools in a rural town in Saint Catherine. It was truly one of the most incredible and transformative experiences of my life. I connected with people in ways I didn’t know were possible and formed lasting friendships that I deeply cherish.
 
Although Jamaica is a place I’ve called home many times, this visit offered a healing and eye-opening perspective. My fieldwork focused on Grade 6 boys, teachers and officials from the Ministry of Education. As you can imagine, these boys were full of energy and spirit—a refreshing contrast to the often intense and rigid academic environment at Cambridge!
 
Of course, the experience wasn’t without its challenges. I heard deeply painful stories and witnessed firsthand the effects of systemic neglect—exactly the kind of issues I’m exploring in my dissertation research. For anyone interested, I’d be more than happy to share my findings once the dissertation is submitted.
 
Since returning to Cambridge, I’ve been deeply immersed in writing. I recently finished the first draft of my dissertation, which is currently 35,000 words over the word count (wish me luck with editing!). My submission is just a few weeks away, so that will be my focus now.
 
 
 
Afterwards, I’ll have about a month left in Cambridge to relax, explore the parts I haven’t seen, and enjoy time with friends. But it’s not goodbye—I’ve decided to move to London afterwards! I’ve signed a lease and am excited to continue my journey here in the UK. I’m also hoping to do some research with my supervisor this summer and possibly publish parts of my dissertation.
