Inbound from Germany

Mary Milroy (Rotary Club of Lethbridge) and her family welcomed NGSE participant Alessandro Raffi at YYC on Tuesday 21 May - and treated him to a Boston Pizza before heading to Lethbridge!

The Milroy family are Alessandro's first host family, followed by the Jayden Backs family in Airdrie, and Brian Carnahan and PDG Christine Rendell in Calgary.

19-year-old Alessandro hails from Motzingen, Germany, and plans to study medicine.

His NGSE program starts in Lethbridge and takes him to Airdrie and finally to Calgary. During his five weeks in our district, he will have vocational, Rotary, and humanitarian service and cultural exposure (and fun!) before heading back to Germany on 24 June.

Examples of the exciting activities in his program:
  • On the vocational front - medical: Alessandro will participate in a walk to raise awareness of Alzheimer's, shadow a speech pathologist and a psychiatrist, spend time at a casting clinic, with Dr. Presley at his medical clinic in Airdrie, and with a family physician in private practice in Calgary
  • On the Rotary and Humanitarian Service front, this exposure will involve attending a Club's pancake breakfast, meeting Rotaractors, attending a few Rotary meetings and making a presentation on himself and his NGSE experiences, and volunteering at the YMCA and in a Senior's Home.
  • Cultural exchange and fun: Alessandro will visit Writing-on-Stone, Drumheller and the Royal Tyrell Museum, the Rockies, and more!

The District 5360 NGSE team, trusts that we will continue to have the support of our District Governor and all Rotarians and Rotaractors in our District for this wonderful, life-changing program for 18 to 30-year-old young adults. As of 1 July 2024, Rotary International has decided not to recognize or support the NGSE.

We are particularly grateful to all who will make this NGSE exchange unforgettable for Alessandro.
