Lindsey Carlene Scott
MSc in Bioscience (Cell Biology, Physiology, and Neuroscience)
University of Oslo (Oslo International Rotary Club, District 2310, and District 5360), 2022-2024

Lindsey is passionate about investigating the pathological mechanisms of disease to inform the development of disease therapies and preventative treatments. She received a Rotary Global Grant Scholarship to pursue a Master of Bioscience with a focus in Cell Biology, Physiology, and Neuroscience at the University of Oslo in Norway. Her program aims to provide students with an understanding of the cellular and physiological processes that underlie disease and apply this knowledge in a research environment.

Before receiving a Global Grant Scholarship, Lindsey received a President's Admission Scholarship, a June Dawson Memorial Alumni Scholarship, and a Fairfax Financial Holdings Bursary to complete her Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours, First Class) at the University of Calgary. Lindsey majored in Biomedical Sciences and earned a place on the Cumming School of Medicine’s Dean’s List for 2020 through 2022. She also received recognition for her scientific communication regarding the COVID-19 vaccines.

During Dr. Craig Jenne’s introductory immunology course, Lindsey discovered a passion for immunology. Her performance in the class and her interest in the subject matter resulted in an invitation to join Dr. Jenne's lab, where she received O’Brien Summer Studentships to conduct immunological research in the summer of 2020 and 2021. Lindsey received training on several immunological techniques, including intravital microscopy, flow cytometry, and cell culture. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, advancements in vaccinology intrigued Lindsey and inspired her to study vaccination and SARS-CoV-2. This interest ultimately led to the publication of her website on the COVID-19 vaccines, which was done in collaboration with clinicians and immunologists at the University of Calgary. The webpage aimed to bridge the gap between the general public and the scientific community by providing reputable and easily comprehensible information on COVID-19 vaccination. Further, Lindsey’s dedication to understanding vaccination informed her honours thesis, "Development of an In Vivo Killing Assay to Measure T-cell Mediated Vaccine Responses.” The aim of Lindsey’s honours thesis was to develop an in vivo assay that could act as a platform for the evaluation of the T-cell response during novel vaccine testing.

Outside of academics, Lindsey worked as an online English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher and as a seasonal associate at Cococo Chocolatiers Bernard Callebaut. She also volunteered with the UCalgary Badminton Club and 19toZero, a multidisciplinary coalition that aims to shift the public perception of vaccines.

Lindsey is ecstatic to begin her Master of Bioscience at the University of Oslo and participate in the initiatives undertaken by the Oslo International Rotary Club.
