Welcome District 5360 Family of Rotary: Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors and EarlyActors.

The New District Governor
It is my honour to be your DG for the coming 2021 – 2022 Rotary year. A little about myself: In 2010, following a 25-year mining career, I started my "Quests for Kids" initiative. Over the next five years, I completed 10 "Quests". These included running 250 marathons in one year, setting five Guinness World Records in endurance events and summiting Mount Kilimanjaro in 21 hours. At the end of 2014, $1.3m was raised for the humanitarian organization Right To Play and 27,000 children had been given the gift of hope. In my work life, I am a professional speaker and author and have published three books including “THE SECRET MARATHON-Empowering women and girls in Afghanistan through sport”. I am a member of the Rotary Club of Cochrane, married to Sue, and have three children, Kyle, Calum and Kristina and three grandchildren, Autumn, Nathan and Matthew.

New Leadership month
July 1st is the beginning of the New Rotary Year when changes in leadership take place right across the Rotary world.  We have a new Rotary International President, Shekar Mehta; read about this inspiring Rotarian. In our District, I’d like to welcome District Governor Elect Steve Leavitt and District Governor Nominee Kurt Kowalchuk.

Move for Polio: Kick-off July 1st!
Today we kick-off the “Move for Polio – End Polio Now” District fundraiser.  It runs from July 1st to October 24th and this is a great opportunity to get your club involved in a fun event. Not only will you be supporting a terrific cause but you will be doing something to help your mental health and wellness. You decide what you do. It could be walking, running, swimming, yoga, fishing or gardening…it’s up to you. If you like the sound of this, bring along a family member or friend and show them that Rotarians are “People of Action”. We are looking for additional Club Champions and so far we have 27 clubs signed up. If your Club has yet to identify a Club Champion, please reach out to your membership and see who is interested in this role. This is going to be a bundle of fun and all for a great cause. Email Marlene Doherty to submit the name of your Club Champion or if you have any questions on how to participate.

Club Learning Webinar: Communication and Social Media
Last year we had such a great response to the Club Learning Webinars that they are back for 2021 – 2022. These sessions will be held every third Wednesday at 7.00 pm and the topic on July 21st is “Communications and Social Media”. To register go to the District website (https://www.rotary5360.ca/ ) /Events, Club and District Calendar. Speaking of the District Website, do take some time to check it out. There’s a ton of great information at your fingertips including the calendar, Online learning, Upcoming events, Weekly Events Digest and People of Action Portal. If you want to keep your finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the District then the District website is the place to go.

Club Visits
I’m very much looking forward to starting my club visits. I’m kicking off with Calgary North on Monday, July 12th at 12 noon. Huge shout-out to Brian Carnahan for organizing these for me. These visits will take place in July, August and September and the plan is to host them on Zoom. Hopefully, later in the year, I will be able to visit clubs for community projects, fundraisers and fellowship however the changing world of COVID-19, vaccines and Government directives will require us to be flexible and adaptable.

RI Convention: Houston
The last couple of Rotary International Conventions have been virtual but fingers crossed we can visit in person for Houston from June 4th to 8th 2022. Registration is open now and if this is on your Rotary bucket list then check out: convention.rotary.org.

Remember: RI President Shekhar Mehta is urging members to become more involved in service projects, saying that caring for and serving others is the best way to live because it changes not only other people's lives, but also our own.

Yours in Rotary,

Martin
