District Goals - An Update

We’re quickly approaching the halfway point in our Rotary year—time is truly flying! Many of you have heard about our District goals aligned with the Rotary Action Plan 4 Priorities, and I’m pleased to share that we’re making solid progress on all fronts.

Increasing our Impact

November 1st was a special day in our District as we welcomed keynote speaker Ramesh Ferris (DG District 5360) for our “Twin the Win” polio event in Calgary, which was also shared via Zoom. With Rotarian William Friedsen setting the tone through his jazz quintet, and Rotarian Bill Quinney ensuring the Iron Lung was also in attendance, we successfully raised awareness of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and Rotary’s commitment to protecting children worldwide from this crippling disease.

We also welcomed new members into the Polio Plus Society—and the year isn’t over yet! If you’d like to join this dedicated group of Rotarians who have pledged USD $100 per year until polio is eradicated, please reach out to Marlene. We began the year with 54 members; our goal is to twin that number. We have moved up to 77 and hope to reach our goal of 108.

I would also like to recognize the CLUBS making significant contributions. Most recently, the Rotary Club of Calgary North pledged CAD $1,500 annually. Bravo to these Rotarians and bravo to our generous clubs!

A big thanks to Rotarians Kurt Kowalchuk & Greg Wing, the U of C Rotaract Club and the Rotary Youth Exchange students for making this event memorable.

Expanding our reach

Inviting clubs to document their membership goal in the Membership Action Plan proved to be a bit challenging, but I’m thrilled to share that 32 out of 43 clubs have now entered a goal into the system. Why does this matter? The numbers tell the story.

Clubs with a goal:
• 70% have gained more than one new member
• Only 6% have fewer members today than on July 1

Clubs without a goal:
• Just 31% have gained more than one new member
• 27% have fewer members today than on July 1

When a club sets a goal, it rallies members around a shared direction—boosting engagement, action, and momentum. Thank you to the 32 clubs who helped move us closer to our District goal of 100%. I’ll gladly take 74% this year!

Collectively, the results are truly outstanding. Take a look at this graph showing total new members added compared to a conservative 5% growth estimate—we are well ahead of the game! Let's keep the energy flowing!

A huge thank-you to Jeff Foss and his incredible team on our District Membership Committees for driving this success.
Membership Engagement Subcommittee: Andrew Bronson ( Lethbridge East), Sue Carpenter-Parnell,(Cochrane),Doug Mac Millan (Calgary Downtown), Mary Turner(Olds)
New Club Development Subcommittee: Co-Chairs Steven Fehr (Calgary North) & Steve Leavitt (Raymond)
Membership Growth Subcommittee: Co-chairs David Thompson (Calgary North) & Craig Henderson (Calgary Downtown)

Enhancing Participant Engagement
With just one club visit left—on Wednesday, December 3rd with Medicine Hat Ignite—our card-writing service project (for those who participated during my DG message visits) is wrapping up. Have you received your card yet? The final batches should be in the mail over the next couple of weeks.

At every single club visit, without exception, there were smiles, comments, and genuine excitement about this project. Thank you all for embracing this idea and helping us UNITE FOR GOOD across the District. This District goal is now officially complete—and I hope many of you will continue staying in touch with your new Rotary friend and family member. It truly became a District-wide service project unlike anything we’ve done before.

And if you’d like to stay part of initiatives that are “firsts” in our District, then get ready—our District Conference is shaping up to be something extraordinary. We’re expecting over 500 attendees! Don’t miss the article later in this newsletter for more details.

Increasing Our Ability To Adapt

The goals for this year are to:

  1. Update our Committee Terms of Reference (TORs),

  2. Create or revise policies needed for stronger governance, and

  3. Refresh our Strategic Plan in alignment with the Rotary Action Plan.

This is a significant undertaking that will span the entire year. So far, we have received four updated TORs and obtained the original source files needed to review and realign the Strategic Plan with the Rotary Action Plan. More updates will follow as the year progresses.

December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month

Our District is actively engaged in Global Grant projects around the world. Currently, clubs funds and District designated funds contribute to the success of Disease Prevention and Treatment global grants in the following countries:

• Bolivia
• Burundi
• Ecuador
• Guatemala
• India
• Sierra Leone
• Sri Lanka
• Thailand
• Uganda
• Ukraine

Through your generosity to The Rotary Foundation, you are making a meaningful difference in the lives of people in each of these countries. Thank you to the Rotarians who lead, support, and participate in these projects—your commitment is truly commendable.

Did you spot it in the Rotary Magazine?

The Order of the Zucchini got the attention of the Editor of the Rotary Magazine. She thought it was a great example on how we bring humor to Rotary and make the world a better place. The mention of the Order of the Zucchini was nested in a bigger article entitled "What Makes Us Happy".

Here is the article extract:

Be Part of our "Celebrate" Movie!

We hosted Twin the Win on November 1st, an event never been done in our District and we continue to create NEW OPPORTUNITIES for our Rotarians and their clubs. This year we want to showcase your club’s projects or initiatives in our District’s very own feature film: Celebrate!

Over the next few months, documentary producer and Rotarian, Rick Castiglione, will be collecting images and videos from our clubs, with plans to incorporate pieces of each media into one production celebrating our District's many successes.

✨ Here’s how you can participate:
  • 📸 Send us your best photos of club projects, events, and fellowship.
  • 🎥 Share short video clips that capture the action and energy of your Rotary work.
  • 📝 Include a brief description so we can highlight the impact behind the images.
All submissions will be woven together into an inspiring movie that will premiere at our District Conference in Red Deer this May. Don’t miss the chance for your club to shine on the big screen and inspire others with the difference you are making!

📩 Submit your materials by February 1, 2026. Click here to view the instructions for uploading your material.

Let’s celebrate how we UNITE FOR GOOD and create amazing impact together — one project, one event, one story at a time!

Club Visits Come to an End

We managed to fit in most club meetings before winter weather hit Southern Alberta!

RC Olds – At an early morning club meeting we were warmly greeted by Rotarians in Olds. It’s wonderful having a cozy meeting space at the back of a restaurant—especially when everyone can order anything they like from the menu! Our Rotary card-writing service project was warmly received, and I’m looked forward to attending their Gala event on the weekend.

U of C Rotaract Club –That same day, I made my way to the University of Calgary to meet with the Rotaract club. Wow—those campus facilities are impressive! They almost make me want to go back to school. We had a strong turnout, and I truly appreciated hearing their thoughts on the challenges and opportunities they see ahead when it comes to staying engaged in Rotary. The group also offered excellent ideas for planning the District Conference. Once again, it’s clear that we need to adapt and ensure our events reflect what Rotaractors are looking for in a conference.

RC Calgary Fish Creek – The shortest distance I have had to travel to visit a club club is 1 kilometer. Indeed, the Rotary club of Fish Creek actually meet right on my own street a very short walk door to door! So why don’t I join their club? Because I have orchestra rehearsal every Monday night and have to be in downtown Calgary for 7:00 pm. What a lively bunch of people and they also had many guests, some of whom I know will be inducted in the coming months!

U of L Rotaract Club  –A longer drive down the road took us to the University of Lethbridge Rotaract club. Once again there was high energy and lots of students in attendance. We explored the same questions I posed to the U of C Rotaractors and I invited these students as well to explore Rotary further when they are done their studies. Once clear, obvious and easy transition from their University clubs to community clubs is the Rotaract United club which meets online. No matter where a person is geographically, this club of young professionals/students offers a great Rotary option.

Rotaract United – I met with Rotaract United on the 26th of November and it looks like they are working on their Action Plan to get a clearer vision for their future. President Uvi started off the online meeting with a wonderful icebreaker game. I always find it refreshing to hear the perspective of younger members as it truly reminds me that we are a diverse organization where having an open mind is extremely beneficial. Unfortunately I was a bit slow on taking a picture of the group so there are a few attendees missing from this image.

There is 1 remaining club visit: Medicine Hat Ignite which, interestingly enough, is a SATELLITE club! Yes, that club model really works! Check out my January newsletter for more information.

NOVEMBER CLUB/DISTRICT EVENTS

You never know who you'll meet!
I attended the Olds Gala on Saturday November 8th and was seated randomly at a table of people I did not know. Well that didn't last very long because I was seated beside Jerry Napier, a long time Rotarian who had just recently moved from Grande Prairie (If you know anything of Grande Prairie, you know they are a BIG ROTARY town!). Jerry and I had a wonderful time exchanging ideas and thoughts about the state of Rotary and the impact stories of our District activities. Jerry is contemplating joining the Rotary Club of Olds. I hope to see his name on our list of new additions to our District in the near future. Congratulations Rotary Club of Olds on an entertaining and successful fundraising event.

Rotary Remembers

This event is held annually in Calgary and was extremely well attended this year. Thanks to PDG Rick Istead for leading the team in a moving and engaging event. Guest speaker Dr. John Ferris enlightened us about the events in the Battle of the Atlantic and many were moved by the overall Remembrance ceremony. Our Calgary Rotary Club Presidents read the honour roll from their clubs. Thanks to all who attending. Click here to see the photo album.
