District Governor Message
Once last item...

Well, here we are with edition number 12 of our monthly bulletin and it is now time to say thanks to everyone for a wonderful year. Liz and I have thoroughly enjoyed our time and it is hard to believe that it is almost over. What a privilege it has been to serve you- we cannot thank you enough for all of the support you have provided to us in the last 12 months.

Two weeks ago, in Canmore, we `Rose to New heights` with all 350 attendees Celebrating, Discovering More and Making New Connections. For 48 hours we did just that with some very inspirational speakers, a variety of interesting breakout sessions and super entertainment. I would like to thank my own club, The Rotary Club of Calgary Heritage Park for its unbelievable support of this event – not to mention support throughout the year – and the wonderful folks of the Rotary Club of Canmore, without whom this event would not have been such a success.

This year was the first awarding of the Monty Audenart Inspirational Award which was presented to the very deserving Hank Popoff of the Calgary Chinook Club. We were thrilled that Liz Audenart was able to be with us to present this very special award. The District once again was one of 150 Districts in the world to receive the prestigious Service Above Self Award and the recipient was none other than District Governor Nominee, Dan Doherty. Congratulations to both Hank and Dan on your well-deserved accomplishments.

All clubs will now be in the throes of handing over the reins from one executive to another and I want to once again thank all of “my” Presidents, Assistant Governors and the District Organization for their commitments during this year. In a month’s time I will be handing over to DGE Neil Berg, of the Red Deer East Club and we wish Neil and his Team all the very best for the coming Rotary Year.

Why Media Kits Play a Key Role
Why Media Kits Play a Key Role in Engaging Media. Tips

Why do you need a media kit? To answer that question, let me ask another. “How do you tell the story of Rotary on single page news release?” The short answer is, you can’t. The story of Rotary is complex and has many layers. This is the latest in a series about how to generate media attention for local clubs and causes. Click at the bottom of this post for links to previous posts relating to this topic.

Guatemala Project Partnerships

At DisCon 2016 it became apparent that there are multiple clubs involved with projects in Guatemala.

It was suggested that a meeting of interested club representatives in the near future to share knowledge about this common focus would be useful.  If your club has a completed or ongoing project, or is considering a project, please email Bill Skinner (Calgary Heritage Park)

Hopefully a meeting can be arranged before the end of June, but waiting till Fall is also possible.  A meeting location outside of Calgary is likely.  At this time the following lead clubs have involvement in Guatemala:

Calgary Heritage Park

Calgary North

Calgary West

Calgary

Canmore

Sylvan Lake

There are also clubs that have funded projects led by others.  Please also advise if you know of other clubs with potential interest.

Los Amigos Project 2016
The team of drivers and trainers returned from Mazatlan, Mexico, on Friday May 6, where they had delivered 8 public safety vehicles and trained 32 Mexican EMS volunteers.  This was the culmination of the Los Amigos project for 2016 - we now start on the project for 2017. The Los Amigos project is an joint venture among 12 Rotary clubs in District 5360 stretching from Kindersley to Pincher Creek and Calgary to Cardston.  Over the year we encourage our local municipalities to donate retired ambulances, fire trucks, handibuses and school buses to Los Amigos so that we may drive them some 4,600 km to Mazatlan, Mexico, where they are donated to Mexican local authorities judged to have the greatest need by our Rotarian partners in Mazatlan.  Without this partnership of District 4150 in Mazatlan area, this project could not possibly work.

This year's convoy drove down 2 ambulances, 2 fire trucks and 4 handibuses each of which were loaded with wheelchairs, walkers, hoses, air tanks, fire fighters protective clothing and basically anything else we could scrounge that would A)  be useful and B) is permitted to be imported into Mexico.

Since all vehicles and their cargo are imported into Mexico on a strictly duty free basis it becomes vital to first receive formal permission for duty free importation before even departing Alberta.  Obtaining this permission is a prolonged process involving hours filling in forms in the Spanish language, photographing and recording details of each item and then couriering all that down to Mexico City.  For the 2016 year over 500 sheets of paper were sent down - a lot of boring paperwork.

Youth Exchange International Dinner

The Inbound and Outbound students of District 5360 joined together on April 9
to host an International dinner to benefit ShelterBox.

ShelterBox is aligned with the exchange program because many of the boxes are distributed in countries where our exchange students come from or go to (Ecuador, Fiji, Thailand, Japan to name a few).
This year’s International dinner raised over $27,300. These means that over 20 families will receive shelter and be able to sustain themselves during a time of disaster.

June 2016

British writer and Royal Air Force pilot Roald Dahl was also an avid photographer who carried his beloved Zeiss camera on his many adventures. At a time when each photograph had to be laboriously developed by hand, on film or glass plate negatives, he amassed a collection of hundreds of images. In later years, these photographs served as a visual record of his travels, a way to document his experiences and share them with others. Yet he always spoke of his memories as being far more vivid than the photographs could ever reflect. So many events and experiences, he said, were simply impossible to capture; they could not be adequately conveyed in images or words.

Language may fail, and photographs fade; minds are fallible, and details are lost. But some experiences, as Dahl said, never dim; they stand out in our memories, even after decades, as a wall of flame. They rear up forever over the landscape of our past, dividing our lives into what came before and what came after.

That metaphor has stayed with me throughout the past year as I have traveled the world for Rotary. For indeed, this entire year has stood, and will always stand, as a wall of flame in my mind, dividing my life into before and after.

When I think back over these 12 months, I see a bright kaleidoscope of images cascading before my eyes, day after day, week after week. The anxious parents in Chandigarh, India, hovering at the bedside of the child recovering from lifesaving heart surgery. The bright flags of Nepal fluttering over an entire village that had been rebuilt after the devastating earthquake. The feeling of awe in St. Peter’s Square at the Jubilee of Rotarians celebrated by Pope Francis. Joyful gatherings around the world, in so many countries, in so many languages – with friends I had never before met, my brothers and sisters in Rotary.

To serve as president of Rotary International is a colossal undertaking, one that cannot be truly conveyed in images or words. It is a wall of flame that will burn forever in my memory, dancing with light, shifting in shadow. A thousand images jostle together in my mind, a thousand recollections, a thousand emotions. Together, they form a great mosaic; together, they show the bright and glorious work of your hands.

As this Rotary year draws to a close, I am prouder than ever to be part of this great organization: one that makes the world not poorer, but richer; replaces despair with hope; raises up those whom fate has brought low; and is a gift to so many, while allowing each of us to Be a Gift to the World.
