James Wheeler Davidson Book Launch, Thu Mar 22, Calgary

Book Launch for Book on James Wheeler Davidson

2:00 pm, Thursday, March 22, Taylor Family Digital Library, room 520, University of Calgary

James Wheeler Davidson (1872-1933), prominent Calgary Rotarian and founder of numerous Rotary clubs throughout Asia, is the subject of a new book, From Province to Republic to Colony, which chronicles his early career as a correspondent during the 1894-95 Sino-Japanese War and his subsequent life in East Asia for the next eight years as an author and United States diplomat. The University of Calgary Archives and Special Collections will host a launch for this book, compiled and edited by Professors David Curtis Wright (University of Calgary) and Lin Hsin-yi (National Taiwan Normal University), on Thursday, March 22, at 2:00 pm in the Taylor Family Digital Library, room 520, on the University of Calgary campus.

From Province to Republic to Colony draws on Davidson’s personal collection of rare photographic images and source documents archived at the University of Calgary. Selected portions are reproduced, illustrating crucial moments in Taiwan's history. These include selections from Davidson’s war diary, newspaper clippings, and lantern slides. Professors Wright and Lin each offer introductory historical background essays and deliver commentary on more than 500 historical artifacts. For more information on this book, visit https://press.ucalgary.ca/books/9789860531640.

The Recreational Vehicle Fellowship, or RVF as it is affectionately known by its members, is one of the 74 fellowships of Rotary in which the members have a common bond ... in our case a love for camping and rallies in various scenic locations in North America.  Our membership includes Americans, Canadians, Brits and Australians ... and hopefully you!

If you are a Rotarian and have a love for camping, be it in a pop-up tent trailer or a Class A motorhome, join our fun group.  Even if you cannot make it to Toronto, there are a number of other events and Rallies each year that may fit your schedule.

To check out past rallies, our newsletter, and for a membership application, go to our website:    www.rvfrna.org
