82nd Waterton Glacier
International Peace Park Assembly
Thursday 18th – Sunday 21st September 2014

Rotarians and family members are invited to participate in the 82nd Waterton Glacier International Peace Park Assembly that will be held in Kalispell, Montana. The Rotary Clubs of Western Montana in the Flathead Valley have planned a very informative and entertaining program for all participants.
 
The highlights that follow are still in the process of being finalized, more detail is expected to follow.
 
Thursday, September 18th
  • 3:00pm - 8:00pm - Early Check in for those who may be planning on Golf or other activities on September 19th.
  • 10:00 am - 2:00 pm - Pick up the park. Work with USPS staff to help with beautification activities in the Apgar Visitor Centre area. Meet at the centre.
 
Friday, September 19th
  • 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM - Registration at the Hotel. Breakfast on your own.
  • 8:30 AM - Golf at Buffalo Hills Golf Club. 1176 North Main Street. Meet and pay at the course, first tee off at 8:30 AM.
  • 8:30 AM - Guided Hike to Apgar Lookout in Glacier National Park. Meet at the hotel registration desk with the guide. Distance is 6.6 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1,850 feet.
  • 9:00 AM - Guided Hike to Avalanche Lake in Glacier National Park. Meet at the hotel registration desk. Distance is 4 miles with an elevation gain of 500 feet.
  • 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM – Day in Bigfork. Bigfork is noted as one of the “best small towns in America” is on the north shore of Flathead Lake. You will tour many of the galleries in the community including a glass blowing studio. You will also have the opportunity to meet local mystery writer, Leslie Budewitz, who has won several awards for her writing.
  • 4:00 PM - Board buses at the Hotel for a short trip to the docks to meet the Far West, the largest cruise ship on Flathead Lake. (Capacity 149, register early to ensure you can be accommodated) Cruise the lake with catered hors d’oeuvres and cash bar. At Lakeside, board the buses for a short trip to the Flathead Lutheran Camp and a BBQ of chicken and ribs. Entertainment by Rob Quist and the Montana Band.
  • 9:00 PM - Bus transportation back to the hotel. Note: If space is not available on the cruise, directions will be provided for registrants to meet at the Lakeside Dock for a bus ride to the Camp for the BBQ.
 
Saturday, September 20th
  • 8:00 AM - Buffet Breakfast in the convention hall.
  • 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM - Jeff Mow, Superintendent of Glacier National Park and Ifan Thomas, Superintendent of Waterton National Park will speak on the “State of the Parks.”
  • 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM – Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park Assembly in the Convention Hall. Registrants should plan on attending this important meeting to hear about the work of the Association.
  • 10:15 AM to 11:00 AM - Convention Hall: Steven Nakana – Rotary Foundation World Peace Fellow. Zahid Hamdard – Afghan Enviromental Preservation expert and member of the Kabul Rotary Club.
  • 11:00 AM - Convention Hall: Dr. Frank Tyro of the Great Bear Foundation and Polar Bear expert.
  • 12:00 to 1:45 PM - Lunch with Denver Holt in the Convention Hall. Denver is an excellent speaker who will educate and entertain attendees on animal issues relating to the Peace Park.
  • 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM – Dr. Dan Fagre: Research ecologist on Peace Park Glaciers.
  • 3:15 PM to 4:30 PM – Optional tour of the Conrad Mansion /Violin concert. Buses will depart the Hotel at 3:15 PM to go to the Conrad Mansion, an outstanding example of luxurious pioneer living and period architecture in the Pacific Northwest.
  • 5:30 PM – Cash Bar in the hotel lobby
  • 6:30 PM – Banquet in the Convention Hall. Speaker will be Dr. Jack Stanford, Director of Flathead Lake Biological Station
 
Sunday, September 21st
  • 7:30 AM - Buffet Breakfast in the Convention Hall Speaker – Pastor Glenn Burfeind
  • Following breakfast participants will then depart for the Hands Across the Border Ceremony in Glacier National Park. Travel to Glacier National Park in your own car or car pools, leaving Kalispell by 9:15 AM to arrive at Apgar Transit Centre by 10:30 AM. There will not be a charge to enter the park, tell the attendant that you are going to the ceremony, which will take place at the Apgar Amphitheatre.
  • The ceremony will be held outside, rain or shine and families are welcome. This is the final event of the Assembly and is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the International Peace Park that United States and Canadian Rotarians started in 1931.

Hotel Information
The Host Hotel is the Hilton Garden Inn in Kalispell.  The rate for the conference is $119.00 per room. Call the hotel at 1-406-756-4500 and request the Waterton- Glacier International Peace Park rate.
This rate is only available by direct contact with the hotel and expires Thursday 28th August.
