On July 4th there was an estimated 3833 newly arrived Ukrainians in Alberta.  Canada is receiving approximately 500 more every day.  Statistics on the number of Afghan refugees is equally staggering.

Rotarians in our District are putting out the Welcome Mat for newcomers adjusting to Canadian life.
Here is what we can support you, and your club with:

Documentation overview – in urban and rural areas, details will differ, however, the processes and sequencing of activity are the same.
In Rural areas, particularly in Olds we followed these guidelines.

Resources to support the above process include and are not limited to the Alberta Motor Association, often located in most cities, the Calgary Catholic Immigration Services, St. Vladimir’s Church (Calgary) the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

Financial Support is critical – The Rotary Club of Calgary North has been fundraising to assist newcomers and their sponsors.  This is a collaborative effort from many Calgary community organizations.

Or perhaps hold a Fundraiser. The Rotary Club of Calgary North is a registered Foundation with Revenue Canada and can receive funds for charitable use and issue appropriate tax receipts.

Help: The Rotary Club of Calgary North Foundation can accept funds from donors and issue tax receipts, these funds can be returned to your club to support club projects in your community.  Contact David Thompson at rccn952ukraine@gmail.com for more information on this.

It takes a community to raise a child. Or a Ukrainian. Or an Afghan newcomer.  Look to your community for help through Food Banks, housing availability, second-hand stores for clothing, and local businesses hiring newcomers.

Remember our Rotary Network – we know people who know people, Make our connections work to safely welcome and support these newcomers to our communities!
